Treatment and Recovery
Treatment and Recovery
Mental health recovery is a journey of healing and transformation, enabling a person with a mental health problem to live a meaningful life in a community of his or her choice while striving to achieve his or her full potential.

There are many different types of treatment for mental illnesses. Visit the Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health’s website for more information.

Discussing one's treatment options and voicing concerns with doctors and/or therapists is essential for effective healing.  Asking questions and getting answers is part of informed and appropriate treatment. If you are dissatisfied with your care, change treatment providers or get a second opinion.

Support Groups

In addition to treatment, participation in a support group can also be very helpful during the recovery process.  Support group members share their experiences with the problem, learn coping skills and exchange information on treatment experiences.  Many people also find strength and support through their religious and spiritual affiliations. The Illinois chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness’ website has contact information for chapters across the state.
